Articles Special Treatment is All in a Night's Work for this Unique Company
Posted by Gateway on Sunday, October 15, 2006 (16:30:53) (5066 reads)

“Concierge Services” has become a buzzword as of late with a wide variety of businesses attempting to set themselves apart from the pack by servicing their clientele with an assortment of perks. But for one Southern California company, this concept isn’t a marketing tool, it’s about potentially saving the life of those who hear the warning signs of a not-so-silent killer.

Snoring is the butt of jokes, cartoon caricatures and is frequently an annoyance for those who share the bedroom. But it also is an indicator of a deadly condition known as sleep apnea. People who suffer from sleep apnea stop breathing for up to 2 minutes at a time, sometimes hundreds of times a night. Often undiagnosed, sleep apnea affects more than eighteen million Americans and can lead to a host of medical conditions, some fatal.

Articles A Bear in Ballet
Posted by Bruin on Monday, December 15, 2003 (12:02:37) (6295 reads)

Let's be honest here; one does not associate Bears with ballet, unless we're talking a campy burlesque involving fat, hairy guys in long underwear and gym socks stumbling around to the music of "Swan Lake" while their pals whoop it up from the audience. C'mon, it's funny. No one seriously believes a fat, hairy guy even belongs on stage alongside a petite, graceful creature who weighs less than what most of the guys reading this article lug home in groceries for a week.

And yet, five years ago, I was approached by the newly appointed Artistic Director of the Madison (Wisconsin) Ballet who asked me to audition for the role of "Drosselmeyer" in a production of "The Nutcracker" that he was directing and choreographing. Initially, I thought he was kidding; I mean, LOOK at me: 5'8", 260 lbs, balding, bearded and greying. I look more like Sebastian Cabbott than Baryshnikov. Not to worry, said he, it was a character role, and didn't involve any "real" dancing. The director had seen me perform with the local Gay men's chorus, and knew that when singing a solo number I did more than just sing a song, I performed it. My solos were a study in shameless mugging and over-acting.

Articles General: What type of Job are you really looking for?
Posted by bearmaster on Wednesday, September 10, 2003 (13:32:23) (2637 reads)

A lot of people have the same day-in and day-out job. Does it really satisfy? I have a fairly normal 9-5 (ok, 8-4:30) job and it has great benefits and great pay, but am I truly satisfied?

It's not entirely a dead-end job, but it's not somwhere I want to be for the rest of my life. If I could choose, I'd love to be running this website and the print magazine solely. I suppose I like to eat...teching this site and inquiring with the magazine doesn't pay much of anything, but I am still hopeful!

Articles News: 10 Basic Rules for a Bear Bar
Posted by Bruin on Monday, June 09, 2003 (10:09:41) (6021 reads)

I'm not a "bar person". Never have been. So it was a bit of a stretch for me to visit a Bear bar while on vacation a couple weeks ago. Having no real goal or objective, I took the opportunity to study the Bears in their natural habitat, and came away with a few observations:

1) The basic T-shirt color is Black. This is not only slimming, it hides beer and food stains.

2) Cowboy boots may look hot, but since bar stools are at a pemium, you'll be on your feet a LOT, so wear sensible shoes. Sneakers are always good, workboots are fine. If you MUST go western, opt for lace-up ropers.

3) The rumors are wrong. Being the "fresh meat" in the bar does NOT guarantee that you will be the instant center of attention. This has NOTHING to do with my hometown "Troll" status and is NOT just sour grapes. It's NOT!

Articles General: Glen & Jerry's BEARFOOT INN
Posted by bearmaster on Friday, November 29, 2002 (17:37:47) (11940 reads)

by Todd Bennett

At the footsteps of the Bearfoot Inn.
2002 Bearfoot Inn

Forty-two year old Glen Boomhour and thirty-seven year old Jerry Pergolesi are the owners of Torontos newest Bed & Breakfast, Bearfoot Inn.

Glen, a Toronto native, is the middle child of a large, strict German/Dutch family of seven childrenthree brothers and three sisters. Glen has lived in Toronto, Ontario all of his life. Though he planned to go to college after graduating from high school, Glen decided to take a year off to work and travel. He found himself enjoying the travel and money so much he decided to pursue the hospitality/food industry instead. Glen has done it all from waiting tables, bartending, and managing several restaurants to running a multi-purpose theatre in Toronto. His dream has always been to own and operate a Bed & Breakfast, but thought it would be a venture he would pursue later in life.
