Ειδήσεις - Civil Partnerships
This I cannot just keep to myself or just my friends, I know it isn't relevant to many people who come onto Inside Bear, but I feel I must post this for any British gays who I know would be extremely interested and concerned. A good friend of mine, Eral, sent me the following and I have been asked to pass it on:
Eral says: As you may know, the British Government has recently issued a consultation document on the legal recognition of gay and lesbian couples. A few local councils allow registrations but these have no legal authority and there is no plan to allow conversion of these registrations into the new partnership scheme.
The proposed legally recognised registration scheme will give same sex couples all the benefits of marriage which gay men and women don't currently have. For example, it will give us the right to make decisions on treatment for partners when they are ill, rather than that decision being made by relatives who may not have had any contact with the person for years; recognition under inheritance rules (we currently have to pay inheritance tax if a partner dies which often means the family house needs to be sold); pension and benefit rights; ability to gain parental responsibility for each other's children; recognition for immigration purposes; tenancy rights; and a right to register the death of a partner.
The full details are in the consultation document at:
http://www.womenandequalityunit.gov.uk/research/civil_partnership_consultation_FINAL.pdf
More than ever this Government works on "evidence based policy". Take it from one who knows! I really believe the political will is there but enough people need to support this proposal to prove the need. We've got to counter the right wing religious organisations that are bound to respond in large numbers.
If you can, please send an e-mail in support of this proposal by 30 September. Don't worry if you don't have the time to respond to the individual points raised. A simple response saying this is a good idea will suffice. We need to bombard the relevant Departments with e-mails.
For those in England send your e-mail to:
civil.partnerships@dti.gsi.gov.uk
If you are in Wales send your response to:civil.partnerships@wales.gsi.gov.uk
So please visit the site and read up and let them know what you think, it is about time we had more rights and say in this country!
And finally please pass this on to others.
