Ειδήσεις - A Coming Out Story
Coming Out Coming out is never easy. For some, the end results are good, with support coming from all sides, including their own family. Sadly, on the other side of the spectrum, the worst possible scenerio plays out, and the support that is sorely needed just isn't there, leaving a gay person feeling completely alienated. But, right before the words "I'm gay" leave our lips, we all feel the same; like we are walking into a large dark room not knowing if we will find a light source to keep us from stumbling.

At 18, I wasn't thinking about coming out. I wasn't thinking much at all, which is normal for someone at that age. I never really had to come to terms with my sexuality, I had always known that I was attracted to men, so it never came as a surprise. The only surprise that I felt was the day I realized that the fact that I was gay wasn't going to make life as easy for me as for someone who is straight.

Anyway, the 4th of July was coming up, and I thought it would be nice if I took my family to Downtown Indianapolis to watch the annual fireworks display up close. I packed up my mother, stepfather, and my younger brother and sister into my flat black 1978 Mercury Marquis. On the way downtown, things seemed normal. My mother was scolding my stepfather for breaking wind, and my sister and brother were both begging for me to roll down a window.

Once we reached downtown, it took me forever to find a place to park. My patience paid off, as I found a space near where we had planned on camping to see the fireworks. While I was trying to fit that big boat of a car into the parking space, my eye spied a cute bearish kind of guy that tried to slip passed my car to cross the street. I was spending so much time ogling at him, that I didn't notice that I was about to run him over. My sister let out a yell and I hit the brakes. The guy understandably flipped me off and trotted to safety. My face started burning.

At this point, I braced myself for the oncoming tirade from my mother about how I need to watch what I was doing, and that I could have killed that poor man. Instead, all I got was complete silence which past experience told me wasn't a good thing.

I finished parking the car and stopped. Again, my family didn't move, as if they were waiting for something. My mom opened her purse, pulled out a cigarette, lit it, drew in two lungs of smoke and said, "You know, men aren't like deer. If you hit one, you don't get to take him home."

It took me a second to realize what had just happened. There I was, leaning against the closet door, safe, secure, and unaware of my surroundings, when here comes my mother yanking open the door, causing me to spill out onto the floor. The silence seemed to go on forever as I sat there trying to think of something to say. Finally, my sister broke the silence by saying, "Look, William, we have known for 2 years. We were waiting for you to tell us, but we figured that was never going to happen. So, do us a favor, and don't try to deny it, because we know better."

I never asked how they found out, because I didn't care. All I knew was that they had already accepted it, and it wasn't an issue. That was the way of our family. If something turns out better than you expect, don't question why. I consider myself grateful for that moment. Eventually, I did have that first time where I got to volunteer the information of my sexuality to another person, but because of my family, as unorthodox as they seem, when I got to that door that lead to that dark room, I had a small but reassuring light to help me out.
