News - Coming Out

This summer I became sure of my sexual orientation- I knew I was gay. Before I was having fun-filled bouts of denial and doubts, but after avoiding it for ever, I finally admitted it. I decided to keep it to myself though, with the exception of a few very close friends of mine....

Ah yes, But- that magical word in the english language which causes one to abandon all hope - luckily, in my case it wasn't as bad as it could have been, they just thought I was wrong. They said I was too young (I'm 19, by the way) to know my sexual orientation, and that I hadnt met the right girl. I figured the evening had been going pretty well, so I didnt argue, and just said maybe.As the summer moved on I sounded my parents out by bringing up my gay/lesbian friends, or the activities we had done at the GSA at my school that year- just making sure they were okay with it (My dad is pretty conservative). After a few weeks I grew pretty tired of acting even mildly enthused every time my dad pointed out a “hot chick” to me, or asking me how things were going between me and my best friend Liz (wink, wink).
So I decided it was time to tell them- I gathered them to the table and said “Mom, Dad – I’m gay.” They paused, and cleared their throats, and said, “Okay- that’s okay, we still love you.” We talked about it for a little bit- the fact they still love me and all that. And I was feeling very good, as I should, because not many parents are so receptive, I know.
Then, my mom looks at my dad and says “But… we don’t think you’re right – you just haven’t found the right woman, you’re too young to decide your sexual orientation.” (I’m 19, by the way) “Everyone feels close bonds to friends, it might not be love.” Etc, etc. I figured the evening had been going pretty well, so I didn’t bother arguing, and just said “Maybe”
So they may not believe me, but I told them. And that’s all there is to that story. Soo – yeah… obviously I am the master of resolutions. Eh-hem. The end.
