News - 150 Years of Bear Poetry
2005 Marks 150 Years of Walt Whitman's "Leaves of Grass"
During 2005, three cities--New York, Washington, and Camden, New Jersey--are celebrating the 150th anniversary of Leaves of Grass. The poet who practically invented Bearhood actually lived in these cities.
What is surprising is the way Whitman's readers, particularly those who are artists in their own right, are also responding in far-flung communities in America and Europe, from Wisconsin to France, and from Alabama to the Netherlands. "Is Walt Whitman about to make a comeback?" asks Newsweek. "Stay ahead of the pack." (Newsweek, May 30, 2005, p. 78.)
Here is a random sample--by no means a comprehensive list--of the varied kinds of events which mark this milestone.
NEW JERSEY
In July, the Walt Whitman House and local groups are offering special tours of the Walt Whitman House in Camden, in conjunction with a series of other regional events. An exhibit at the Walt Whitman House is highlighting several first editions of the book.
WASHINGTON
In May, the Library of Congress unveiled an "American Treasures" exhibit entitled "Revising Himself: A Celebration of the 150th Anniversary of Walt Whitman's Leaves of Grass." It runs through December 3, 2005.
Meanwhile, Whitman advocates proposed a congressional bill, "The Walt Whitman Way Designation Act of 2005." This woud give an honorary designation to F Street NW between 7th and 8th Streets in Washington.
CONNECTICUT
On July 1st, Central Connecticut State University, in New Britain, CT, will open an exhibit called "Look Back on Me". It runs through September, 2005. Drawn from the collection of Ed Centeno, this exhibition consists of colorful and whimsical items embodying Whitman’s name and image in commercial goods. The intention of this exhibit, says Centeno, is not to make a critical appraisal of Whitman's work, but rather to help explain the Walt Whitman phenomenon.
WISCONSIN
For the week of July 31 - August 6, 2005, Jeff Poniewaz & Antler of "The Clearing" will conduct a course entitled "A Walt Whitman Anniversary Celebration."
DanceCircus of Milwaukee will present two performances of a dance piece, "Leaves of Grass," on October 20-22, 2005. Jeff Poniewaz, Milwaukee poet is working with Artistic Director Betty Salamun in selecting Whitman’s poetry for performance.
HOLLAND
Radio Netherlands this year broadcast a documentary, Whitman - The Good Gray Poet, based upon interviews with biographer Gary Schmidgall and Margaret O’Neill, curator of the Walt Whitman House in Camden.
In June, Rotterdam celebrated 150 years of Leaves of Grass during its 36th Annual International Poetry Festival. During a marathon programme at Poetry International, local poets recited their translation of Whitman's words into Dutch, and the jazz quartet Special Delivery played a composition,"Song of Myself."
OREGON
The 3Ms Group, Portland's Quaker luncheon club , celebrated 150 years of Leaves of Grass with a presentation by Mitchell Santine Gould. He read them a "translation from the Whitmanese," entitled "Elias Hicks, the Most Democratic of Prophets."
NEW YORK
This autumn, the New York Public Library opens its exhibit, "'I Am With You:' Walt Whitman’s Leaves of Grass." The exhibition will feature first and rare editions of the major versions, as well as manuscript drafts, books, and trial proofs annotated in the poet’s hand. Whitman’s international reputation will be illustrated with first and rare editions of Leaves of Grass in German, French, Japanese, and Yiddish.
Meanwhile, composer Brooklyn composer Jennifer Higdon's commemorative music for Leaves of Grass, "Dooryard Bloomed," recently earned some high praise from New York Times critic Allan Kozinn. "For a new work to share a program with the Ninth [Symphony of Beethoven] and not be overwhelmed by it takes some doing: even works by Bach, in that context, have been made into also-rans... But her 24-minute setting for baritone and orchestra held its own, with sections of it re-surfacing in memory well after the concert ended..."
On July 29th, 30th, and 31st, Cirque Boom Theatre will present an experimental work entitled "Madness & Joy!," celebrating the 150th anniversary.

All of these events and much more are being tracked at Portland-based LeavesofGrass.Org, which is selling a commemorative cap and poster.
