I always thought of it as lack of attitude.To be a bear is to be happy with who you are.you dont have to put on an act.you are as you are.it dosent matter what sombody looks like but how thay feel.its not an exclusive club.

for me its about comfort. being comfortable with your body, your masculinity (not having to put on a constructed version of "manliness")
and being comfortable with others,

and that means a lot of guys are built for comfort (the big 3 b's; bear, belly and butt) because of that but beards and body fur are just nice window dressing
